Gail LaFont Huie, 66, died peacefully at home in the company of family on June 23, 2011, following a brave struggle against lung cancer. She was born in Plainview, Texas, on Nov. 24, 1944, to Harold Mathew LaFont and Jane Powell LaFont.
She grew up on the family farm where she loved to ride her favorite horse, Booger, with a group of friends who formed a club known as the "H.I.'s" (Horses Incorporated). She was a cheerleader at Plainview High School and, following graduation, attended Texas Tech University for two years, then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1966 with a B.A. in English. She also earned a teaching certificate to teach English and Latin. After teaching at Plainview High School for a few years, she returned to UT-Austin to get a master's degree in English. She encountered a distraction along the way when she met Bill Huie, who also was working on a graduate degree at UT-Austin. They were married in 1972 and recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary. Gail received her master's degree in English and helped support Bill by teaching at McCallum High School until they moved to Corpus Christi, along with their new baby boy, William, in 1974. Gail soon became active in the local duplicate bridge scene, developing into one of the best bridge players in town and traveling to tournaments around the state. She also loved tennis, playing three or four times a week and, in her younger years, competing (with Bill as her partner) in local mixed doubles tournaments. Her daughter, Claire, was born in 1978. For a number of years, especially as their children were growing up, Gail and Bill were active in the life of All Saints Episcopal Church, Corpus Christi. In the early 1980s, she began teaching Latin part time at Incarnate Word Academy, finally retiring in the mid-1990s. Other pursuits that brought joy to her heart were gardening, playing the piano (favorites included Mozart, Bach, Gershwin and Porter), traveling, hiking and skiing. Gail was preceded in death by her parents and by her beloved uncle Elwin ("Uncle Ed") Powell of Buffalo, N.Y.
She is survived by her husband, William O. Huie Jr. of Corpus Christi; by her son William L. Huie, his wife Stephanie, and her grandson, Ethan, of Austin, Texas; by her daughter Jane Claire Huie and her partner René Pinnell of Austin, Texas; and by her brother William H. LaFont and his wife, Peggy, of Plainview, Texas. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors, 4901 Everhart Road, Corpus Christi, from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2011, in Plainview Cemetery in Plainview, Texas, under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home of Plainview. An informal memorial celebration of Gail's life will be held at her home, 6334 Grandvilliers Drive, Corpus Christi, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011.
Memorial donations may be made to the IAT Clinic, Attn. Joyce Missick, P.O. Box 22579, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33335. Condolences can be made at cage-mills.com
