Marion E. LaBarre Ferris was born November 19, 1916 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Chester and Mary (Echle) Schouten. She grew up in Keokuk and attended school there, graduating from St. Peters High School in 1934. She went on to attend College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota before transferring to the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, graduating in 1939.
She was united in marriage to Robert LaBarre at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Keokuk. He passed away on January 9, 1957. Marion was later united in marriage to Donald "Bud" Ferris at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Keokuk on February 6, 1960. After their marriage they lived in Algona. Marion worked as a secretary at Bishop Garrigan High School from 1972-1983.
In 1969, Marion was a charter member of the AAUW, helped with delivering Meals on Wheels, member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and active member of St. Cecelia Parish.
Marion enjoyed traveling and had made it a point to travel to every state; she also traveled to Europe and Canada. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing cards, and was an avid fan of Bishop Garrigan athletics and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Marion passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa. She was 95.
She is survived by her children, Sue and John Surges of San Francisco, CA; Charlene Connelly of Kingwood, TX; Brian and Becky LaBarre of Spencer; Mark and Tracey Ferris of Franklin, OH; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Jack Schouten and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Robert LaBarre and Donald Ferris; son-in-law, John Connelly; sisters, Helen Morris and Geraldine Risser.
