William was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War in 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment, Company I. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army on June 17, 1861 at Laurel Hill, Virginia. He originally enlisted for state service for one year term to protect the railroad lines that ran through northern and western Virginia at that time but the regiment was transferred into the Army of Northern Virginia for Confederate service on July 1, 1861. The regiment was reorganized on May 1, 1862 and surrendered at Appoomattox on April 9, 1865. Of the 850 men originally mustered into the 31st only 57 remained at Appomattox and William was one of them. He was born in Lewis County, Virginia near Pigion Roost. He was the son of Joseph Linger I and Martha Jane Mercy Hinzman and was married to Josephine Alice Porter in 1864. Their children were Elsie Madora, Sarah Francis, Margaret Alice, Lucina A., Edwin Philmore, Jasper Newton, Joseph Franklin, Earl Conway, Julia A., Alfred Kemper, Annie Myrtle and Hettie Ellen.
