In his early adult life he was on the faculty of Elkhart Business College, however he had health problems and in 1911 moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico in hopes of regaining his health.
He died in New Mexico at the age of 27 from scarlet fever. A graveside service for him was held at Grace Lawn Cemetery. His wife also contracted scarlet fever, however she recovered.
