James was in the 1st Ala Cavalry, Company E. He died during the Civil War. In a letter dated May 15, 1865, the writer makes reference to his death. She says, "Uncle Taylor's James is dead. His wife and Uncle Taylor went to Chattanooga and brought his body back and buried him at Shiloh". He married Mary Jane Willis in 1859, and they had one daughter, James "Alice" Kyle.
