Andrew L. Kustra

Andrew L. "Andy" Kustra, 85, of Tarentum, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at Applewood Personal Care Home, Brackenridge.

Born Jan. 30, 1921, in Ellsworth, the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Agnes Kantarik Kustra, he lived in Tarentum since 1956.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Army in Asia. During World War II, he met Eleanor Roosevelt on the Galapagos Islands, shook her hand and had lunch with her. He was driving a gasoline truck on the Burma Road when he heard the news that the Enola Gay dropped the first atomic Bomb on Hiroshima.

Mr. Kustra worked at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Co. in Brackenridge from 1952 to 1962. He was a mill operator at Alcoa in New Kensington from 1962 until 1983.

He was a member of Holy Martyrs Parish and the F.O.E., both in Tarentum. He was an avid sports watcher and a fan of the Steelers and Pirates.

He is survived by a son, Roy Andrew (Angela) Kustra of Arnold; a daughter, Audrey A. Williams of Buffalo Township; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Margaret Richards of Tarentum; and three brothers, Walter (Marie) Kustra of Russellton, West Deer, Emmett Kustra of Tarentum, and George (Mary Lou) Kustra of Logan Ferry Heights, Plum.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Amelia "Millie" Tristani Kustra on April 1, 2000; and two brothers, Joseph and Bernard Kustra.

Relatives and friends will be received from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday in the Greenwood Memorial Park Chapel, 3820 Greenwood Road, Lower Burrell, where services will begin at 10 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Aaron J. Kriss, officiating. Interment will follow. Military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army 99th Regional Readiness Command, Coraopolis. Arrangements are entrusted to the PAUL R. AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 921 Freeport Road, Creighton.
