Michael the son of Merril A. Kuhse and Mary E. Kuhse of Huntsville Alabama enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 10 1964 in Nashville TN. He arrived in Vietnam on April 1 1968 where he was assigned for duty and served with Company K, 3d Battalion, 27th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

After units of the 7th Marines, and Company I, 27th Marines made heavy contact with the NVA on May 16 on Go Noi Island in the Dien Ban District of Quang Nam Province during Operation ALLEN BROOK, on the next morning Company I came upon a dry river bed with a treeline bordering the hamlet of Le Nam (1) just above Route 537. As the Marines entered and began to cross over the NVA sprang their ambush. Hidden in camouflaged bunkers the enemy poured rocket, automatic weapons and small arms fire on the exposed troops in a killing field. Reinforcements were not able to reach the embattled Company by an enemy who had preplanned a series ambush points to block the advance of any reaction force. An order went out for the rest of the 3d Battalion, 27th Marines to be heli-lifted in to join in the fight with Company K the first on the attack. The battle progressed throughout the day until dusk with many casualties, LCpl Michael Kuhse was one of the casualties, he was killed in action by hostile rifle fire.
