Obituary from the San Antonio Express-News(TX), Nov. 4, 2010:

HAMMACK, STEFANIE
During her 89 years on this earth (06/08/21 to 10/31/10), Stefanie Michaela Kuehner Hammack sang, danced and charmed her way into countless lives. The joy she brought to loved ones and strangers alike is immeasurable and timeless. Little Steffi outran the fastest boys and out-charmed the prettiest girls. Her first 26 years in her homeland Vienna saw Steffi create riches from refuse during the depression; dodge bullets during a civil uprising; flee Russian invading forces; and make Nazi soldiers back down. She softened the hardest hearts; confounded Catholic bishops; sang in operettas; treasured her family; and let a special GI win her heart and hand. In 1950 she made the hard decision to follow her husband, Lane, back to Texas. During 60-yrs in the US, she baked homemade, whole wheat bread in the 1950s land of bleached white everything; got her US citizenship only after the Civil Rights Act was adopted; and did wife/mother/friend with unrivaled quality and panache. Her 54 years as a Texan (51 in S.A.) were busy: she decorated her new dream home; helped found the St. Matthews United Methodist Church and singing in the choir; continued her personal civil rights efforts; sewed Susan's Brahmadora costumes and prom dresses, cleaned Victor's athletic uniforms and wounds; served in the MacArthur Booster Club and the Foreign Exchange Student Program; bowled; square danced; knitted; and loved people without regard to race, ethnicity, creed, religion, or sexual orientation. After Lane died, she returned to her Catholic roots. She is survived by son Victor and his wife Sherri; their children Hannah, Meghan, and Jacob; daughter Susan and son Aaron; nieces Brigitte and Regina. Her memory will be cherished by many other family members and friends. Visitation and viewing: Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home, Fri 11/5: 7-9pm; funeral mass: St Anthony de Padua Church, Sat 11/06/10: 10 am. Burial and wake to follow. Memorial donations: San Antonio Humane Society and Caritas.
