Helen Evangeline Kruse Adams was born October 23, 1916, at Boelus, NE, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Berck) Kruse.
She graduated from Boelus High School, attended the University of Nebraska and received her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. On August 31, 1935, she was united in marriage to Charles F. Adams at Boelus, NE.
They moved to Charles City in 1942. During her working career Helen was employed at the First Methodist Church in Charles City from 1951-1963, the Rudd Rockford Marble Rock Community School from 1966-1968 and the Charles City Community School from 1968-1982.
She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities and was on the Board of Directors of Clear Lake United Methodist Camp. Helen's memberships also included the Phi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, the American Association of University Women, the Big Four Retired Teachers, Women Investors, Charles City Women's Club, served as a Pink Lady, and helped with Meals on Wheels. She served for 10 years as president of the Charles City Community Board of Education. During her tenure the high school, Jefferson School and an addition to the Lincoln School were built. During that time there was a redistricting of several schools, including Floyd, into the Charles City Community School District.
Simultaneously she served on the Iowa State School Board. For the last 23 years she volunteered as a tax preparer with AARP for the low to moderate income and elderly. Helen was selected Chamber of Commerce's Woman of the Year in 1988. Helen was an organizer and a take charge person. Her international view included traveling and supporting various students from around the world, and activism in political matters such as World Federalism. She also took the responsibilities and joys of wife, mother and grandmother very seriously. Helen always looked forward to spending time with her family. Her zest for life and service inspired all who knew her.
Living family members include a son, Clark (Constance) Adams of Anaheim, CA; a daughter, Sharon (William) Schneider of Colwell; three grandsons, Steve (Linde Boggess) Adams, Thomas Adams and Andrew (Hope Lafferty) Schneider; two great-grandchildren, Megan and Matthew Adams; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on August 7, 1991, two brothers, Harold and Baldwin Kruse, and four sisters, Luella Fredricksen, Esther Weiss, Viola Hansen and Alvina Teichmeier.
