Write-up by Carroll Krohmer: They moved from WI to ND where Dad was a professional ballplayer for a short time & he did carpenter work. They moved to Montana in the spring of 1907 & homesteaded near Homestead, MT. Dad became a farmer & did carpentry in his spare time. Their 1st home was a 2-room shack until a 6-room house was built. They sent for a lot of their groceries in the early days from a catalog called "Savage". Us kids attended school about 2 1/2 miles from the farm & we either walked or Mother took us by horse & buggy. Visiting neighbors was our most frequent entertainment. Mother raised a lot of turkeys & would herd them like sheep. Winters were really bad in the early days. I remember Dad stringing twine between the house and barn so he could follow it. We heated early on with cow chips that we kids would gather from the pasture. Then later we hauled coal from 6 miles away.
