Ludmila Mary Baldree, born March 31, 1924, in Brainard, Neb., died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Canterbury Manor Nursing Center, Waterloo, Ill.

Mrs. Baldree was affectionately known to most of her friends as Chris. She was the spouse of her late husband, Dr. Charles Edward "Pinky" Baldree, Jr., of Belleville, Ill., who was the first physician in Belleville to limit his practice to surgery and the first Chief of Staff of St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill.

Mrs. Baldree graduated from Holy Trinity Catholic Grade School in Brainard, Neb., Brainard High School where she was the school's representative to Girl's State in Lincoln, Neb., in 1941. Mrs. Baldree then graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital/Creighton University School of Nursing in 1945 and then joined the U.S. Army Nursing Corps as a second lieutenant. She served at Fort Leonard Wood and O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Mo., where she took care of burn patients, a very difficult nursing duty, many of whom were pilots. She remembered having German prisoners-of-war working under her direction as nurses' aides. After her stint in the Army, Ludmila then entered anesthesia training at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Ill., becoming one of the first licensed nurse anesthetists in the state of Illinois. She was granted license number 26 in 1948. Ludmila then came to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville in 1948 where she met her future husband. They were married Oct. 15, 1949, at Mazenod Hall by Rev. Jansen from St. Henry's. Mrs. Baldree then became a full-time wife and mother which she described as the best time of her life. Mrs. Baldree and her family were members of Blessed Sacrament Parish in West Belleville for 36 years. She and Pinky were long-time members of the Elks Club in Belleville, she was fond of referring to the Elks acronym of BPOE as the "Best people on earth." They were also early and long-time members of the Belle-Scott Committee with dear friends Eugene and Enid Brauer. After the death of her husband in 1976, Mrs. Baldree went back to work as a registered nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville from 1976 to 1984, when she retired at the age of 60. Mrs. Baldree moved to Sun City, Ariz., in 1984 where she lived for 20 years before failing health forced her to return home where she lived at the Meredith Home in Belleville for three years before moving to Canterbury in 2007.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mary, nee Havlovic, Kriz of Brainard, Neb.; two brothers, Theodore (Pat) Kriz of Memphis, Tenn., and Freddy, Jr., in infancy; and a stepson, Charles John (Herta) Baldree of Heidelberg, Germany.

Surviving are a brother, Richard (Lynn) Kriz of Memphis, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Patricia (Ted) Kriz of Shalimar, Fla.; sons, David (Mary) Baldree of Waterloo, Ill., and Mark (Kathleen) Baldree of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Mary (significant other, Kenneth Lovelett) of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven granddaughters, Amelia, Elizabeth, and Alison Baldree of Waterloo, Alexandra and Meredith Baldree of Phoenix, Ariz., Patricia, nee Baldree, (Markus) Holzherr-Duncker of Nussloch, Germany, and Nicolette (Tom Strong) Baldree of Warwick, R.I., and Heidelberg, Germany.
