Obituary for
Bernice Bouma
BERNICE BOUMA was born the fifth of six children to Germ and Bertha (Kracht) Baker on June 18, 1929 on a farm two miles east of Steen, Minnesota. She attended the Steen Reformed Church where as a young girl she made her profession of faith. Bernice was raised on the farm and received her education at District 1 country school in Clinton Township through the eighth grade. Following her schooling she did housework for area families. On a blind date, Bernice met a gentleman named Otto Bouma. The couple dated and on September 7, 1950 they were united in marriage at the Steen Reformed Church. Following a honeymoon to Niagra Falls, the newlyweds lived on an acreage near Steen. In 1952, Bernice and Otto moved onto a farm two miles north of Steen, which they purchased in 1956. Here the couple made their home and raised their two children. Bernice did housework, cooked and helped in the many aspects of farming. In 1990, Bernice and Otto moved into Luverne, Minnesota. They remained active in community and church, especially Bible study. In October 2014 Bernice was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome. On Monday, December 1, 2014 Bernice went to be with her Lord at the age of 85 years, five months and 13 days at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Bernice was a member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne and was a past member of the Steen Reformed Church. She enjoyed participating in Bible study. Bernice enjoyed camping and traveling. She was an avid reader of Christian stories and enjoyed listening to Dr. David Jeremiah and Chuck Swindoll. She also enjoyed going out for coffee and loved getting together with her three sisters and three friends. Most of all, Bernice loved spending time with her family, especially her great-grandson, Flynn Otto.

Bernice is lovingly remembered by her husband of 64 years, Otto; two children, Gwen Mulder (Kevin Klooster) of Luverne, Larry (Sally) Bouma of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three grandchildren, Kyler (Brenna) Bouma, Cade and Sarah Bouma; a great-grandson, Flynn Otto Bouma; a sister, Bertha DeZeeuw of Sheldon, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Jane Baker (John) Bosch of Steen; and other family. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ed (Verla) Baker, Fred (Gert) Baker, Albert Baker; a sister, Jennie (Jay) Bonnema; and a brother-in-law, Wesley DeZeeuw.

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15
