When the Kovacs' marriage disintegrated, Kovacs fought for custody of his daughters and in extremely unusual move at the time, his petition was granted. The courts awarded Kovacs full custody of his children, possibly due to allegations of Wilcox's instability. Little Bette was three, Kippie eighteen months when their mother kidnapped them. Over two years Kovacs spent more than $50,000 searching for the children. Bette and Kippie were eventually discovered living in a small town in Florida and were returned to their father's custody with whom they grew up. Kippie married screenwriter Bill Lancaster, son of actor Burt Lancaster and had one daughter, Keigh. She died at 52 after a long period of ill health. Her epitaph reads: "Ernie's beloved daughter. Brave and beautiful. Adored sister, mother and friend. We all loved her so."
