Military Service: "Private, Lexington Wildcats, Company I, 14th Regiment N.C. Troops (4th N.C. Volunteers) Ezekiel was born in 1833 to Andrew and Margaret Hedrick Koontz. He worked as a farmer, and, on December 29, 1855, he married Sarah Hedrick. Ezekiel and Sarah would have two children, Martha (1856) and Mary (1859), before Ezekiel was conscripted on July 16, 1862. Ezekiel was listed as missing at Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862. No further records."

"Confederate Dead. -- Mr. Henry C. Mumms furnishes us with the following list of Confederate dead, whose bodies have been recovered during the week, up to Tuesday. he is still actively engaged in his work:
