She was born on September 27, 1940, in Davidson County. She was the daughter of the late Willis Gray and Leona Snider Koontz. She has been a real estate broker for over 30 years and currently worked with Harbor Realty in Davidson. She was a member of the National Association of Realtors, the Charlotte Regional Realtor Association, NC Board of Realtors and past president of the Iredell County Medical Auxiliary. She was also a member of Williamson's Chapel United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Carlton Koontz.

She is survived by her children, Robert "Anson" Coffey and wife, Nell, Leigh Coffey Byers and husband, Marty and their daughter, Marlee Byers all of Mooresville; brother, William "Bob" Koontz and wife, Mary Cook of Lexington; sister, Margaret Leonard and husband, Rodney of Thomasville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
