Nov. 2, 1906 Oconto Falls Oconto County Wisconsin, USA
August (Frantz) was born to Martin and Rosealea (Schmidt) Kontizer on July 9, 1838 in Germany. He married Eva Weiland in Germany. They came to America from the Port to Bremen on the SS America and arrived in Baltimore, MD on April 4, 1884.
Names of six children were found including Mary, Andrew, Albert, Antone, Clara and Frantz (died young). The 1900 census listed August and Eva as having 18 children, five still living.
In Germany, before coming to America, the home of August Kontizer burned, which took the lives of at least three of their children which were a pair of twins and one other. According to the story passed down, Andrew and his brother Albert were in the house with the three smaller children who were sleeping. The rest of the family were working in the field. Andrew was standing by the chimney and suddenly said to Albert, "Let's go outside." Instead of unlatching the door, they jumped through the window. By the time the rest of the family noticed the fire, it was too late to save the smaller children. Evidently they had relatives in Cato, WI so decided to come to America.
An article relating to his death said he died after an illness of little more than a week. He had been seriously ill on two previous occasions with internal complications, and the third attack proved too much for his advancing years. He was an honest, upright man, respected by all who knew him.
Stories provided by August's granddaughter, Agnes Konitzer Bridger Bast in her book called Original Konitzer Family Tree Book.
