Feb. 18, 1839 Cussewago Township Crawford County Pennsylvania, USA
Elizabeth Mary Koehler was born 18 Feb 1839 at the family homestead in Cussewago Township, Crawford County, PA to F.W. Koehler and Penelope van Elsen Koehler, pioneers of the family from Holland. Elizabeth was the 7th of 14 children. On 1 Jun 1870, she married George Henry Bethune, a native on Taunton, MA in a double wedding ceremony with her younger sister, Lydia. The 1870 census of Conneautville, PA includes George and Elizabeth who are living with Elizabeth's older sister Anna and her husband Dr. Peter Deichman. George is working as a carpenter. In 1873, their first child Frederick William was born followed in 1874 by Mary Penelope and in 1877 by Anna Benla. The 1880 census again finds the family in Conneautville with George working as a carpenter. In 1900, the family is still in Conneautville although the oldest son has left the family group and is now found in Union City, PA.
What happens after 1900 to Elizabeth Mary and George Bethune is not known. From records in Trinity Epicopal Church in Conneautville, George, Elizabeth, Mary and Anna are identified as being present on 30 Apr 1916 but "removed to Union City, Pa." is listed beside their names. Fred moved to Los Angeles between 1900 and 1910 and apprently remained there the rest of his life. Mary is found to have moved to Los Angeles, CA by 1910 with her husband, Chester A. Mulvin, originally from Union City, PA. She apparently died there between 1910 and 1920 when her husband is found in Inglewood, CA as a widower. Anna apparent never married but is found in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Los Angeles, CA census and apparently died there 25 Aug 1953.
Perhaps the likeliest places for Elizabeth and George Bethune to have died and were buried would be Conneautville, PA, Union City, PA or Los Angeles, CA. Since by 1910, all three of their children had moved to the Los Angeles area, that is the likeliest place. Information on their deaths or burial locations would be welcomed.
