Shirley M. Alderfer of West Chester
Shirley M. Alderfer, 87, of West Chester, passed away on Wednesday December 7, 2011, at the Chester County Hospital after a short illness. She was born April 28, 1924 in McKeansburg, Pa., a daughter of the late C. Richard Koch and Vena M. Hettinger Koch of Orwigsburg, Pa.
Shirley was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital School of Nursing. She lived in West Chester the past 60 years. She was active in her early years helping to organize Chester County Day and was a volunteer at the Chester County Art Center. Married to her husband, Dr. Harold Alderfer for 59 years, Shirley was very supportive of her husband in his career; spending time in Nuremburg, Germany after the war before they settled in West Chester, as her husband started his medical practice. Shirley enjoyed traveling to Europe with her husband and the American west with her family.
Surviving are one brother, Richard Koch and a sister, Arlean Miller, both of Orwigsburg. Shirley is survived by her two children, Karen Alderfer Whelan and husband Peter of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Rebecca J. Alderfer of Philadelphia; and one grandson, Peter A. Whelan. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold H. Alderfer, MD.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Memorial Service, 11 a.m. Saturday, December 10, at First Presbyterian Church, Miner & Darlington Streets, West Chester.
Interment will be at Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery, West Chester.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chester County Hospital, 701 East Marshall Street, West Chester, PA 19380 and/or Barclay Friends, 200 N. Franklin St., West Chester, PA 19380.
