Sylvia Ada Church
January 3, 1913 - August 29, 2008
Sylvia Ada Church of Grand Junction died August 29, 2008. She was 95 years of age. Sylvia was born in 1913 to William and Mary (Martin) Knuckles. In 1928 she married Paul E. Church. Early in life she lost one son at six months of age to double pneumonia. She also lost two or three infants at birth, but raised six children. In September 1973, her son died at the age of 42 and 21 days later her husband, Paul died. In July, 2008 her oldest daughter died. Survivors include three daughters and one son, Freeda Saunders of Albuquerque, NM; Wanda (Roy) Foster of Yuma, CO; Glenna McClain of Grand Junction, CO and Buddy (Anna Mae) Church of Naturita, CO, as well as 18 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 20 great great grandchildren. In 1942 the family moved from Missouri to Colorado. Sylvia liked to play in the dirt and raise vegetables and flowers. She also enjoyed fishing and cooking the fish on the bank of the river on a fire. Most of all, Sylvia loved the Lord. She very seldom missed church service. Sylvia was a very giving person. One always left her home with veggies she had grown or a pot holder or something else she had made. Sylvia always wanted to fix something to eat for anyone who came in and she was an excellent cook. She was also a seamstress who could sew anything she wanted without the help of a pattern. Sylvia could look at a catalog and sew a dress just like the picture. She made quilts of all kinds, sometimes making her own patterns. We have lost count of all the afghans she crocheted. Her last two and one half years was spent at Mantey Heights Nursing Home. There, she loved all the nurses and staff and they loved her. To honor the life of Sylvia, a funeral service will be held on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the New Hope Pentecostal Church in Naturita, CO with burial to follow in Peel Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior. Arrangements are under the caring direction of Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.
