SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Keith Hugh Knost, 61, of Shepherdstown, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at his studio in Shepherdstown. Born Dec. 26, 1938, in Webb City, Mo., he was the son of the late Lloyd H. and Zina Stanfield Knost.
He attended George Washington University, Kansas City Art Institute and Central Methodist College. He attended graduate school at the University of Missouri. He was an interior designer, beginning his career in the field of millinery. His original hat designs were owned by many well-known Washington, D.C. personalities including Mrs. Richard Nixon. He then opened a gift and design shop in Shepherdstown. He created and was president of two corporations, Keith H. Knost Fine Gifts; and Keith H. Knost Interiors. He also owned three gift and design shops at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., at Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. and in Shepherdstown. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He was active with the Historic Shepherdstown Commission; and Entler Hotel. He lectured at Greenbrier Cooking School; The Carleton Varney School of Interior Design; the Greenbrier; and Homestead. He served as a consultant to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York; and held two presentations at the Kennedy Center to benefit the National Symphony Orchestra. He was a decorator for Martha's Vineyard; the Homestead; and the Westfield Insurance Companies, among others. His design work has been published in periodicals including articles in Southern Accents Magazine; The Washington Post Magazine; Veranda Magazine; Town and Country; and the Herend Guild publication, White Gold, among others. His home in Shepherdstown appeared twice in Southern Accents Magazine. He is survived by a brother, Ronald C. Knost of Russellville, Ark.; a niece and three nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary S. Knost. A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, corner of Church and German streets in Shepherdstown. The Venerable G.T. Schramm will officiate. Burial will be private. There will be no visitation. Memorial donations may be made to Shepherdstown Day Care Center, P.O. Box 388, Shepherdstown, WV 25443; or Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401. Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va.
