Elmer P. Knisley, 86, of Greenfield died at 12:04 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Carlinville, where he had been a resident briefly.

He was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Alexander, to Charles Harvey and Rose Etta (Andrew) Knisley. He married Evelyn M. Brooks Sept. 12, 1946, in Pittsburg, and she died May 9, 1976.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Skip and David Riggs and Patty Knisley of Greenfield; four sons and their wives, Paul and Lola Knisley of Victorville, Calif., George and Diana Knisley of Exeter, Michael and Carol Knisley of Greenfield, and Regis Knisley of Jacksonville; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters and their husbands, Rosie and George Buis of Jerseyville and Libby and Tom Ballard of Carrollton.

Preceding him in death were a daughter, Mary Knisley; two grandsons, Doug and Andrew Knisley; three brothers, Edgar, Charles and Jacob Knisley; and two sisters, Virginia Knisley and an infant.

A 1933 graduate of Greenfield High School, Mr. Knisley worked in construction, building hospitals at the Panama Canal before entering the military, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring after many years of service. He enjoyed gardening and reading.

Visitation was Monday at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield, where a prayer service was conducted at 4 p.m. A funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Church in Greenfield with Father Henry Schmidt officiating. Servers were grandsons Jeffrey Knisley and John Riggs. Organist Wanda Stone accompanied Sister Thecla who sang "On Eagle's Wings," "Out of the Depths," "To Everything There is a Season," "We Remember," "Come To His Aid Oh Saints of God," and "Be Not Afraid."

Casketbearers were grandsons Michael Knisley, Jonathan Knisley, Matthew Knisley, Patrick Knisley, Nathan Knisley, Jim Riggs, and Dennis Riggs, and grandson-in-law Craig Camerer. Burial was at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield with graveside military services conducted by the Greenfield American Legion Fitzsimmons Post 225.
