Daughter of James Knight (a preacher). Two brothers & one sister were older than Almena and three brothers were younger. Moved to Detroit with her family at the age of 7y. At the age of 10y, they moved to Ohio and in Jan 1846 she attended the Deaf & Dumb Asylum in Columbus Ohio.
In 1848, brother James M Knight died in Detroit at the age of 14y.
In 1850, her father died at Council Bluffs Iowa on his way to California. Her older brother Charles Knight died in Chicago in 1852 at the age of 22y and was brought back to Jackson Michigan for burial. Sister Mary Ann d 26 Aug 1854 and is buried next to her brother.
