The Belleville Telescope, January 15, 1942
Florence Elizabeth Knappenberger was born in 1884 at Jewell City and passed away quietly in her sleep at her home in Lebanon on January 2, 1942, after many months of illness. She was 58 years old.
She was educated and grew to young womanhood at Jewell City, giving to that community of her many talents while that place was her home. She taught school in Jewell City, Formoso, and Belleville.
Because Christmas was such a beautiful season to her, Christmas day in 1907, was the time chosen for her marriage to C.J. Arbuthnot of Belleville. Since their marriage, they had made their home in Lebanon, and there their daughter, Elise, was born.
Life was ever a thing of beauty to her, full of nature, music and poetry, and she made of her home a place where family and friends found peace and joy. Her chief aim in life was loyal, loving service to her family.
Her town and community always found her ready to serve. Countless numbers of entertainments were written and directed by her, and the past summer, hours of work were spent in writing the Coronado pageant for the Lebanon anniversary. She was vitally interested in the ceremony of dedicating the geographical center of the United States near Lebanon, and at Christmas planned the program for her music club. She was active in club work and has been recognized throughout the state for her efficiency and accomplishments. She was a member and past president of the Library club and Music Study club, a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Embroidery club.
She is survived by her husband; her daughter and son-in-law, Elise and Edward Byler; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Elise and Charles Arbuthnot Byler; two sisters, Mrs. Lee Gramiy and Mrs. James Barbary; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, January 5, the Rev. L.B. Tremain and the Rev. O.G. Brown of Lebanon officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery at Belleville.
