Alice Beeninga, 95, died Jan. 20, 2013. Alice L. Klinger was born July 10, 1917 near Monroe, SD. She grew up in this area and attended school in Monroe until her senior year when she graduated from Marion High School.
She married Earl Beeninga in Monroe on Aug. 30, 1940. They lived in Monroe all their lives. Her husband died Sept. 29, 1994 after 54 years of marriage.
Alice attended Freeman Jr. College and later graduated from the University of Sioux Falls. She taught in country schools for 12 years and in the Monroe school for 15 years before retiring in 1980.
Alice was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Monroe where she taught catechism and Bible school, was active in the Ladies Guild and was church pianist and organist for 50+ years.
She loved music and accompanied Earl on his musical saw as they entertained at many nursing homes, churches and senior citizen events. She also gave music lessons to many young people in the area.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Beverly Beeninga and Bonnie Knauss, 1 son, James and his wife Holly; 3 grandsons, Darren and Ryan Knauss and Jason Beeninga; 5 great-grandchildren, Hayden, Ashley, Hailey, Oakley and Brianna, and 2 step-granddaughters, Carrie and Valerie.
