Parents were Wilhelm Ferdinand Kluemper (originally with an umlaut) and Christina Charlotte Storig Kluemper. of Lohne, Niedersachsen, Germany. Wilhelm died in Germany, and his widow Christina embarked for the US with her two small sons in 1839. She married a ship captain, John Henry Puttmann (also umlauted), and settled eventually in souther Indiana. See her memorial for more information.
