Les came to MT in 1971. He received a BA in business and economics at Rocky Mountain College in Billings and an associate of technology degree in business from North Missouri State. He was an Army Veteran and was a captain in the Montana National Guard.
Les was a four-term member of the Montana House from District 95. He won the seat in 1980 after losing in a bid in 1978 by 21 votes. In 1986 he ran unopposed and was re-elected. He was an insurance agent and was named "Outstanding Young Man of America" in 1981.
