Former Grosse Pointe Woods resident Gordon J. Birgbauer, 94, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.,

Born in Milwaukee, Mr. Birgbauer was a graduate of Eastern High School in Detroit and attended Albion College. Thereafter he helped form Super Tool Company in Detroit and the Village ov Van Dyke (Warren) Mich. and became its president and CEO.

He also helped to organize No Sag Spring Company in the Village of Van Dyke MICH. and later became its president and CEO.

He was actively involved in Lumberjack Building Centers, Inc. In the summer of 1964, Gordon J. Birgbauer, Jr., being a man of considerable foresight and determination, purchased two lumber yards: Algonac Lumber in Algonac and Anchor Bay Lumber in New Baltimore. In the following year of 1965, the Algonac store was built next to the lumber yard. This would be the first of many hardware showrooms for the company.

He was also active with North Shore Estates.

Mr. Birgbauer was a former member of Lochmoor Club, of which he became president, the Country Club of Detroit, the Detroit Athletic Club, Otsego Ski Club, Ponte Vedra and Sawgrass Golf Clubs.

He was president of the Ponte Vedra Community Association, the Cutting Tool Manufacturer's Association and other organizations.

Mr. Birgbauer was a fine athlete who enjoyed hitting booming drives in golf, baseball, badminton and squash, where he won the State Doubles Championship with Eddie Hahn.

He loved hunting and fishing as well as dominoes and card games. He was a loyal friend, a loving husband and a generous and caring father.

He is survived by Odette Lucie Clatot Birgbauer, his wife of more than 20 years; his three sons, Gordon, Ron and Bruce; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Birgbauer was predeceased by his first wife of 48 years, Betty W Birgbauer who passed in 1981.

Funeral services were held in Ponte Vedra, Fla. on Aug. 6, 2003.
