The Rev. Canon Bruce Kirkwood, peacefully went to be with Jesus after a heroic battle with cancer.

Bruce was born in Fresno to Reynold and Teresa Kirkwood, and married on July 2, 1960, in Rochester, NY., to Marilyn Fay Bratt.

Bruce attended Fresno High School, California State University, Fresno, and the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest.

He was ordained in the Episcopal Church, to the Deaconate in June, and to the Priesthood in December of 1961. He faithfully served various congregations in the Central Valley and in Western New York, for nearly 50 years. While his ministry touched all generations, Bruce especially loved High School Youth Ministry, and Camp San Joaquin. In addition to serving the church, Bruce enjoyed running Kirkwood's Design Gallery, his family's business for three generations. In recent years, he took pleasure in providing mortgage counseling.

Greeting him in heaven are his mother and father; and his grandson, Samuel Bruce Bryant.

Bruce "Papa" is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 48 years; his two daughters, Laurie Gabriel and her husband Geno, Shawna Bryant and her husband Steve; his four grandchildren, Lacey and Tess Gabriel, Sarah and Scott Bryant; his sister, Marcia Goatley and her husband Morris and their daughter Sandi.

A Worship Service in celebration of Bruce's life will be held at Holy Family Episcopal Church, 1135 E. Alluvial Ave., in Fresno, on Monday, March 9, 2009, at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bruce's memory to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Madera, Holy Family Episcopal Church, Fresno or Hinds Hospice.
