Veltia Luiscell Hicks, 71, of West Plains, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born March 20, 1938, in Tecumseh, the daughter of Charlie and Chloe (Watts) Kirkland.
She graduated from high school in Gainesville with the class of 1957.
On Oct. 11, 1957, she was united in marriage to Leslie Gene Hicks in Ava, and they shared nearly 52 wonderful years together.
Veltia worked several jobs over the course of her life, most recently working at Baxter Lab in Mountain Home, Ark., for 12 years and Marathon Electric in West Plains for 21 years.
She attended Hawkins Ridge Baptist church.
Because of her remarkable strength and positive attitude, Veltia was an inspiration to everyone who knew her, and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Leslie of West Plains; a daughter, Relena Hicks of Springfield, and four brothers and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Leslie Gene, Jr.; and two brothers.
At her request her body was donated to science, in the hopes that her generous gift would be able to help others. While no services are planned at this time, a graveside service will be held at Clear Springs cemetery at a later date.
