PIONEER RESIDENT OF DETROIT DIES
SEBASTIAN KIRCHNER, 85 YEARS OLD, RETIRED FROM ACTIVE BUSINESS IN 1881
FORMER MEMBER OF OLD BOARD OF ESTIMATES WORKED FOR BOULEVARD SYSTEM
Sebastion Kirchner, 85 years old, a resident of Detroit for 65 years, died at St. Mary's hospital Sunday. The funeral will be held at 8:30 Wednesday morning at the home of his son, Edar E. Krchner, 610 Baldwin Avenue, and 9 o'clock in St. Catherine's Church, Maxwell Avenue, between Sylvester Street and Canfield Avenue.
Mr. Kirchner was born in Germany in 1832 and came to the United States in 1851. In 1852 he settled in Detroit, and lived here continuously until his death. For many years he conducted a dry goods store on Gratiot Avenue, betwen Riopelle and Orleans Streets. He retired from active business in 1881.
In the years 1877-78 he was a member of the old board of estimates and was responsible for the appropriation of money for the commencement of Detroit's boulevard system. He belonged to no clubs or societies. His wife died 32 yeaers ago.
Eight children survive him. George H., president of the First State Bank of Detroit; Charles W., manager for the Ideal Metallic Furniture Company; Albert A., superintendent of Van Alstyne Photoengraving company; Edgar E., manager of the Family theater; Joseph D., a druggist at 460 Sherman Street; Louis K., a resident of Philadelphia; and Miss Lizzie Kirchner and Mrs. Clara Lemersal, both residing in Detroit.
