Lillian Holder Kirby, 91, passed away at Arbor Acres on Saturday, April 10, 2004, after an extended illness. A descendant of Charles and Johanna Holder, settlers of Old Salem, Mrs. Kirby was born Aug. 7, 1912, to Charles Ernest and Fannie Whitman Holder. After graduating from Old Richmond High School, she graduated from Guilford College where her activities included choir, student government and sports. In addition to being a beloved wife and mother, she taught for 26 years at various schools in Pinnacle, Walkertown and Mineral Springs and at Dalton Junior High School. She was an exceptional teacher and deeply admired by her many students. Whether she was teaching English literature, history or civics, or coaching basketball, she was committed to her students and gained great joy from being part of the school community. In college she lettered in five sports and continued a lifelong love of basketball and baseball. After her retirement, she was active in the Retired Teachers Association of Forsyth County, Hoe and Hope Garden Club and Winston-Salem Woman's Club. Throughout her life, she was always an active member of the United Methodist Church, including those in Elm Grove and Ardmore. She was a member of the Alma Nunn Sunday school class and a lifelong member of United Methodist Women. Mrs. Kirby was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Elmer Thomas Kirby, who worked at Rominger Furniture Co.; her sister, Louise Holder; and her brother, Buford Holder. She is survived by her children, Linda Louise Kirby of Winston-Salem, Nancy Ellen Kirby of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Thomas Brent Kirby and his wife, Barbara, of Winston-Salem; and her grandchildren, Laura Kirby Murdoch of New Hanover, N.H., Matthew Kirby Smith of Washington, D.C., and Evan Kirby Dunnagan of Charleston, S.C. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. Hawthorne Road, with Dr. Frank Grice officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The Kirby family will receive friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 12, at Vogler's Reynolda Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. The family extends their sincere appreciation to Hospice of Winston-Salem and to Arbor Acres, particularly the staff at Fitzgerald Health Center for their sensitive and professional care during Mrs. Kirby's illness.
