U.S. Continental Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1753 and practiced law in the courts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey State General Assembly (1772-75) and member of the committee of correspondence for Burlington County, New Jersey (1774-75). In addition in 1774, he was elected as a member of the First Continental Congress and served until his resignation in 1775. After leaving Congress, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey in 1789 and served until his death.
