Caroline was born in 1829 to Joshua Owen, a native of North Carolina, and Nancy (Paine) Owen, a native of Tennessee. She was born in Illinois, likely Adams County.
It was long believed that Caroline married George Hightower Kinkade in 1847 in Adams county, but this is not correct because in 1900 Caroline reports that she has only given birth to two children and only one ("Ella") is alive. The ages of the children do not comport with the 1847 marriage date in which an "Elizabeth Owen" married a George H. Kinkade.
Caroline had a sister, Elizabeth Owen, and it is she who married George Kinkade in 1847. It is she who appears as "Elizabeth Kinkade" living with George on his ex-father-in-laws farm in the 1850 census. She is the mother of Sarah Jane, Jane K. and George Owen Kinkade.
In 1850, Caroline Owen, a 21-year old spinster, is living in Ursa in someone else's household. She is likely working as a live-in housekeeper or is simply staying with them. Sometime after 1853, when George Owen Kinkade was born to her sister, Caroline's sister Elizabeth died.
Husband George had first been married to Eliza Jane (Riddle) Kinkade, who died sometime after the birth of her last child in August of 1842. George had three children with his first wife; Nancy "Nannie"; Susan Frances; and Mary Margaret "Maggie."
He had three children with his second wife, Elizabeth Owen (Caroline's sister) and they were: Sarah Jane, Jane K., and George Owen.
George and Caroline had two children, both born in Ursa, Adams County, Illinois:
Eldorado "Ella", 1858
Joan Poage, 1859
Caroline's husband was a Christian clergyman with a mission to preach to the pioneers. Sometime in 1862, he moved their family to California and is found in Inyo County, California. It is said that he was first man to preach the gospel in California!
Accompanying them to California was Caroline's sister-in-law, Frances Ann (Riddle) McLaughlin, who was said to have been "captured by Indians" on her way to California and then miraculously released. For many years, Frances told everyone that she was part Native American, and there are some that suspect that her time with the Indians was simply a bon voyage trip: an opportunity to say goodbye to native relatives.
In 1870, Caroline and George are found in Visalia, Tulare County, California. Their daughter, Ella, is living with them as is George's 1/2 niece, Henrietta McLaughlin, for some reason. (Henrietta's mother had married again, which may have something to do with why Henrietta is not with her.) Joshua Owen, Caroline's widowed father, is also in the household.
In 1880, Caroline, George and daughter Ella are living at the College of Notre Dame, San Jose, CA. George is still a minister of the gospel. His daughter Ella is a music teacher.
In 1900, Caroline and George are still living with Ella, but she is now married to Philip Gerhardy (erroneously reported as "Berhardy.") In this census, Caroline reports that she has given birth to 2 children but only one survives ("Ella.") This is where we establish the maternity of George's offspring.
The following year, Caroline died. Her husband George died a few years later. Descendants of this couple still populate the western states.
