After a short illness Mrs. Mary K. Dodge, a former well known resident of Upper Alton, passed away at 2 o'clock this morning at her home in Chicago in her eighty-second year of age. Mrs. Dodge was the widow of Professor George B. Dodge who was for many years connected with Shurtleff College and the Wyman Institute, now Western Military Academy. Mrs. Dodge, also, was connected with the faculty of Shurtleff College and is remembered as well as a private teacher. She was a very talented woman and possessed of rare intellectual gifts. As a teacher and student she was particularly interested in literature, languages and history, and was a leader in the intellectual life which had Shurtleff College as its center. Her intellectual gifts were enhanced by a charming personality which won her lasting and devoted friendships. She resided in Upper Alton for over 50 years, having moved away only 9 years ago, and leaves a wide circle to whom her death is a matter of deep regret. Mrs. Dodge was born at China, Maine, November 18, 1843, the daughter of the Reverend and Mrs. S. A. Kingsbury, who for many years made their home with her in Upper Alton. She came of a long lifed family, both her mother and father living to be 85. Two sons survive her. The funeral and interment will be in Alton. The service will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 in the Upper Alton Baptist church. The funeral party is expected to arrive from Chicgo early tomorrow morning.
