Nora Alber, 74, died of lung cancer Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at the Mayfair House in Woodstock. Her previous residence was The Spike, at Bryce Resort, Basye, where she had lived for the past 35 years.
Mrs. Alber was born Oct. 2, 1931, in Inez, Texas, daughter of the late Richard and Milly Antonio Burke King. She was a 1949 graduate of Hermiston Union High School and attended classed in business, art, and interior design at the University of San Francisco, University of Hawaii and the University of Long Beach.
She was married to her first husband, Jessie Earl Booth on Sept. 10, 1949; they divorced in 1951.
On June 15, 1957, she married 1st Lt. John William Alber, USMC and lived at various military bases for the next 28 years. During this time, she worked for 16 different companies doing bookkeeping, real estate, office management, modeling and interior design. When her husband retired in 1978, they moved to Basye and both became active volunteers in community work and members of the Woodstock Moose Lodge Chapter No. 1865. She was a member of the Basye Bodacious Belles, Chapter No. 16402, of the Red Hat Society holding the office of sergeant of the red gloves. She also volunteered at the Basye-Orkney Library, Bryce Resort's Social Committee, the Junior Ski Racing Team, the Junior Golf Team, the Shenandoah County Travel Council and various other Bryce and community projects.
