Bessie Coleman Bell, 88, passed away, June 6, 2009 at Hospice House. She was born Nov. 3, 1920 at Hennessey, OK, the daughter of Oscar and Cleopatra Morgan King. The family moved to Hutchinson in 1922.
She was a 1938 graduate of Hutchinson High School, received her A.A. from Hutchinson Junior College in 1958 and received her Bachelors Degree in Institution Management from Kansas State University in 1966 and was a Certified Vocational Teacher. She was the Hutchinson High Cafeteria Manager and in 1969 was promoted to the District 308 Food Service Manager and retired in 1986. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses, since 1949, a member of the American Food Service Association, Kansas Food Service Association and the American Home Economics Club, she served as a Judge for the Kansas State Fair, taught many food service classes through out the state of Kansas, and was a foster grandparent.
On Dec. 15, 1946 she married Ralph L. Coleman, he died Jan. 13, 1976. On June 25, 1988 she married Curry H. Bell, he died Dec. 30, 1998. Survivors include two brothers; Emerson King of St. Louis, MO, Kenneth King of Hutchinson, two sisters; Wilda King, of Hutchinson, and Lilla King of Wichita, step-children, step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, many nephews, nieces, grand nephews and nieces, cousins, other unrelated friends who considered her their aunt, and many spiritual friends. She was preceded in death by two sisters Maxine Carpenter and Opal Hughes.
Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Sat. at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory with Mike E. Lamunyon presiding. Private Family entombment will follow at Fairlawn Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Thursday and Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in care of the funeral home.
