Bertha was born in Cameron, Texas, to the late Roscoe and Ethel (Rackley) King. She attended school in Bryant Station, was a seamstress and worked at Bill's Dollar Store, Style Homes, and Hensley Apparel. Bertha married Lonnie Gaines on September 7, 1946.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Gaines, in 1991; a daughter; Judy Sawyer; a grandson; Jerry Proctor in 2000; three brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include her son, David Gaines, of Cameron; daughters: Bertha Proctor, of Cameron, Paulette Gossick, of Elgin, Brenda Roe, of Rockdale, and Renee Gaines, of Cameron; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren & 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Patsy Lindley, of California; other relatives and many friends.
