Letter from Jesse's son Samuel, dated March 2, 1856 to Samuel's brother William and sister (William's wife?) who lived in New Lexington, Perry Co., OH:
"Dear Brother and Sister: We take this opertunety of writing to you to lett you know of the helt Father is verey sick at this time. He was taken with a cold and hacking coff which got better and the wors and changed son for abou 7 days, and last Friday he appeared sick at his stomach. He eat a littel a Saterday he eat nothing, and so far of today (which is about 12 oclock) he drank a littel coffee. He is quite sick and keeps his bed about two thirds of the day. The night is mutch the same. He slleps a littel but his naps is very short...say tenn minets or thereabout."
