Holly Catherine Kilmer came into the world on May 28, 1959; a gift to her Mom and Dad on the same day that her maternal Grandpa died.
Holly departed this world on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, her Mom's birthday. Holly's life was a gift, given by God, to her family and friends.
From her childhood home of Gambier, Ohio, to her adopted home of Charlottesville, Virginia, Holly lived her life with vigor and enthusiasm from beginning to end. Holly's nursing career spanned three decades, starting as a paramedic in New Orleans, followed by attaining the rank of Sergeant in the Army National Guard, then graduation from North Central Technical College in Mansfield, Ohio with her RN degree.
She became a traveling nurse specializing in ER and ICU with wonderful assignments in bi-coastal United States locations, as well as London, England, Hawaii and U.S. Virgin Islands where she became scuba certified. She traveled to Europe multiple times, visiting the Kilmer family's ancestral castle, Schloss Weissenstein, near Dresden Germany.
After ten years of traveling she worked the University of Virginia Emergency Room night shift followed by the Blue Ridge Poison Center. She leaves behind many friends that she considered as her extended family.
Holly was an avid gardener pouring over her seed catalogs each spring and harvesting fruits, vegetables and flowers every year. Garden design was her forte and she continued the transplantation of family heirloom plants started by her mother.
She loved to cook, particularly with her homegrown ingredients. She designed and GC'd her home when it was built, afterwards handling the decorating, all while working full-time. Holly was very close to her family, proud of its history and considered the family curator. Her dogs, Thor and Sadie continue a long line of Great Danes in her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Irene Kilmer.
Loved ones she leaves behind include sister, Melissa Read and her husband, Mike; brother, Geoff and his wife, Denise, and their children, Ben, Aimee and Liz Kilmer Mathews and her husband, James, and their son, Liam; sister, Jennifer and her husband, Mike, and their children, Russell, Hans and Max Farmer; brother, Mike and his wife, Ana, and their children, Irene and Jake Kilmer.
Holly's family thanks all of Holly's friends who supported her in so many ways during her battle for health, and the University of Virginia Medical staff, particularly Marcia and Hope in the MICU, as well as Dr. Richard Cambereri and Dr. Thomas Guerrero, of MD Anderson in Houston. Hospice of the Piedmont ably supported her last week at home.
Memorial donations may be made in her name at the SPCA or Hospice of the Piedmont.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Church of Our Saviour, 1165 E. Rio Road, Charlottesville.
