She learned how to drive on a Ford Model T while delivering the Toledo Blade. Helen lived most of her life in East Toledo and met her match on September 25, 1937 when she married the late Melvin Kigar. They had 8 children and often boasted that their family holds the record of 8 children to graduate from Waite High School. Helen was active as Democratic 19th Ward chairperson and was president of the 19th Ward Women's Democratic Club. She was active in many issues over the years including replacing the railroad bridge on Fassett St. and the cleanup of the Unicast site. She received the Judge Geraldine Macelwane Life Time Achievement Award from the Lucas County Democratic Party in 1996. Helen worked for the A&P supermarkets where she was active in the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 911. She was a woman of straight forward candor and generous heart. To her belonged all the instincts and spiritual convictions of a born leader. In her later years Helen was an active member of Lemoyne Baptist Church.
