CROWNPOINT — Services for William Kien, 85, will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 29 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Thoreau. Ansel Twitchell will officiate. Burial will follow at Thoreau Community Cemetery.
Kien died May 23 in Albuquerque. He was born Jan. 1, 1918 in Thoreau into the Towering House People Clan for the Black Streak Wood People Clan.
Kien retired from the U.S. Marines, as a staff sergant, was a Code Talker during the World War II in the fourth Marine Divison. he was engaged in battles at, Kweajalein, Marshall Islands, Tinian, Marianas Islands, Saipan and Iwo Jima, Volcano Island and in the Korea Conflict. He was employed at Serman Institute, Riverside, Calif., Wingate High School, as a Dormitory Manager, andowned and operated a business at Red Rock Laundromat. He was a life member of DAV and Navajo Code Talkers Association. He was a rancher and silversmith. His hobbies included gardening and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Kien of Crownpoint; son, Lester Dean Kien of Gallup; daughter, Olivia Kien of Gallup; brothers, Alfred Henio Kien of Gallup, John Johnson and Roy Mariano both of Thoreau; sisters, Irene Romero of Albuquerque, Christine Kien Heino, Anna Johnson, Ella Kasus and Betty Yazzie all of Thoreau; and six grandchildren.
Kien was preceded in death by his parents, Maire Mariano and Willie Kien; brothers, Raymond Kien and Joe Sky; and sisters, Marie Denetso, Alice Kien Wood and Evelyn Wood.
Pallbearers will be Evans Casuse, Gerald Emerson, Calvin Jim, Jerry Kien, Raymond Kien and Robin Wood.
Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
