Kathryn J. Kersey

Mrs. Kathryn J. Kersey Armstrong, age 71, of New Castle, DE, died on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Christiana Hospital.

Kathy was born in Putnam County, WV, on June 14, 1938, daughter of the late Boyd Kersey and Edna McClanahan Kersey. Hard-working, ambitious, and motivated from childhood, Kathy dedicated her life to helping provide for her beloved family. During her diverse and interesting career, she accepted a position in the accounts payable department of the DuPont Company, where she retired; owned and operated her own restaurant ("Kathy's") in Delaware City for 5 years; and worked as a medical technician for a methadone clinic in Wilmington. For the past 20 years, Kathy was employed as a professional realtor with Century 21, Coldwell Banker, Red Lion Realty, and, most recently, Nickles Realty.

Kathy delighted in spending time outdoors and took great pleasure in both gardening and helping to the manage the family farm. More than anything else, she considered her most important role to be that of devoted wife and mother; she loved spending time with her family, especially her precious grandchildren, whom she adored.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Ramon B. "Ray" Armstrong; children, Kim J. Blaasch (David) of Middletown; Tammy K. Poppe (Wally) of Delaware City; and Ramon B. Armstrong, Jr. of Delaware City; brother, Frank Kersey of Warwick, MD; sister, D. Jenny Hudson (Dexter) of Delaware City; many nieces and nephews including special niece, Gwen McElrath (Don) of Smyrna; and grandchildren, Danny and Matthew Blaasch, Katie and Will Poppe, and Brooke Armstrong. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Arnold, Kenny, Scotty, and Larry Kersey, and sisters, Macel Money, Thelma Kersey, and Dorothy Lloyd.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of MICU 3 at Christiana Hospital for their many kindness during this difficult time.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, March 10, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Delaware City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware City Fire Company, PO Box 251, Delaware City, DE 19706.
