Rev. Francis P. Kenney, age 54, a priest for the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease) on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE.
Born February 4, 1955 in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late John J. and Mary M. (DiCecco) Kenney. He graduated from St. Elizabeth Elementary School (1969) and High School (1973). He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from the University of Delaware (1977) and his Master's Degree in Theology from St. Charles Seminary, Philadelphia. He was a faculty member of Padua Academy, teaching theology (1977-1984). Completing his priestly formation at St. Mary's Seminary & University in Baltimore, Father Kenney was ordained on November 7, 1987 in the Cathedral of St. Peter, Wilmington. He served as associate pastor at Sain Helena Church, Bellefonte (1987-88); Holy Rosary, Claymont (1988-91); St. Mary of the Assumption, Hockessin (1991-97); Church of the Holy Child, Brandywood (1997-03); Immaculate Conception, Elkton, MD (2003-07) and Holy Family Parish, Newark, from where he was placed on disability in the spring of 2008.
Father Francis is survived by his 2 brothers, Robert and Stephen and his wife Rene; his nephew, John Kenney; his 2 nieces, Christine Doyle and her husband Delayne and Mary Beth Kenney and her son David; great-nieces, Mary Margaret Doyle; great-nephews, Delayne and Stephen Doyle; uncle and aunt, Paul and Angeline Latina. In addition to his parents, Father Francis was predeceased by his sister, Nicoletta Hallock and her husband Benjamin; grandparents, Philomenia and Stephen DiCecco.
Calling hours will be in the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, on Wednesday evening, February 18, from 6-9 pm. Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, February 19, at 11 am with Bishop W. Francis Malooly of the Diocese of Wilmington. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.
