Jennie Kennedy Caulkins, 83, of Summit Square, in Waynesboro, Virginia, died unexpectedly Thursday, December 24, 2009, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was born March 30, 1926, in Clearwater, Florida, daughter of the late Gayen and Jennie (Gallant) Kennedy.
She graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing in 1947 and became the evening nursing supervisor at MCV. She was a member of the MCV Nurse Cadet Corps. Jennie was instrumental in the establishment of the Private Patient Pavilion at MCV in 1949, believed to be the most modern of its kind in the United States at that time. She later was office manager and office nurse for her husband, Dr. Whitney Caulkins Jr. She volunteered at Waynesboro Community Hospital and the Augusta Medical Center (now Augusta Health) and helped in the distribution and care of flowers there.
A Charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, she served in many capacities there. Her roles included Children's Choir Mother, Senior High Advisor, Sunday school teacher, and nursery volunteer. She was a member of the editorial staff for the 30th anniversary book about the history of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She literally spent days researching records at the church and at the public library tracking down needed names and information.
Jennie grew and loved roses, and was an active and avid Bridge player. Along with her husband, Whit, she traveled extensively and took several cruises. However, her roles as a supportive wife, mother, and grandmother are the most treasured. She never missed a school event and even drove the team to track meets and cross country events when her sons were in high school. The grandchildren loved visiting their grandmother because she always had a game, craft, or activity planned for them. As a mother she made great sacrifices and expected no credit in return when it came to building a strong family.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Whitney Caulkins Jr., they celebrated their 63rd anniversary on December 22, 2009. Additionally, she is survived by her sons, Dr. David Whitney Caulkins and his wife, Patricia, of Waynesboro, Dr. Michael Kennedy Caulkins and his wife, Dr. Pamela Caulkins, of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Sarah Catherine Caulkins and her husband, Michael Zuk, Whitney Cabell Caulkins, Martha Leigh Caulkins, and Landon Michael Caulkins; and brothers, Guy Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Joyce, and Hayes Kennedy and his wife, Susan, both of Clearwater, Florida.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Westminster Presbyterian Church by Dr. Jon Lovelady.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
