John was my grandfather and the middle son of John & Lula Mae Kidwell Kenley. He married Mary Caroline Honerkamp in Scott County, KY on May 16, 1934. Together they had six children, Howard, Fannie, Albert, Adrian, David, and Susan. I am Albert's daughter. I lived with my grandparents until I was twelve. Grandaddy was a prankster and an excellent story teller. I remember one time my little sister and I went with him to visit his brother, William. It was way out in the country. When we got ready to leave it was getting dark. Grandaddy told us a tale of a psycho who escaped and was hidden in the outhouse of these three girls who lived out in the country. While telling the story, he turned the headlights off and stopped the car. He told us it had quit. We believed him, and of course were shaking in our seats.
Another prank he pulled on my sister occured on the farm. We were sitting on the tailgate of his truck while he slowly drove through the farm. I told my sister, Theresa, "Watch this." I jumped off the tailgate and jumped back on. Of course she tried it, then I did it again. Theresa jumped off, then when she went to jump back on, grandaddy sped up. Theresa fell in a big pile of cow you know what. But everything about grandaddy wasn't joking. He worried about us. He was always giving us money, but we had to spend it on coats or shoes. I guess he knew that mom was too poor to afford them for four kids. Thank you grandaddy, for everything. I love you and miss you.
