PEORIA, Ill. ­ H. Allene Ashburn, 84, of Peoria and formerly of Hannibal, died at 3:59 p.m. May 8, 2000, at OSF St. Clare Home.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Peoria. The Rev. Thomas Bayes officiated. A graveside service was at 1 p.m. Friday at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
Mrs. Ashburn was born May 25, 1915, in Clarksville to John and Vina Kelso.
She was married to Ray Ashburn on June 17, 1934. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Stephen Ray Ashburn of Peoria; two grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Johnston of Peoria.
She was preceded in death by four brothers; and one sister.
Mrs. Ashburn was an elementary school teacher for 36 years, teaching in Peoria District 150 at Franklin School, and in Hannibal, retiring in 1980. Before starting her teaching career, she worked at the International Shoe Company in Hannibal.
Mrs. Ashburn was a 50-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma teaching sorority, serving as local chapter president and national delegate. She was also active in the local chapter of Civic Federation. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Peoria, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years and on the Board of Christian Education. She also served as a Sunday School teacher and BYPU Youth Leader at Calvary Baptist Church in Hannibal before moving to Peoria in 1955.
Memorials may be made to the Christian Education Department of her church to the scholarship fund of Delta Kappa Gamma.
