Mass of Christian Burial was conducted for Nelly J. Bjerke, 87, Elkader, Thursday, March 26, 1998, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elkader. The Rev. Paul R. Peters officiated. Burial was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader. Pallbearers were Gordon Kelly, Kenneth Kelly, Jon Mitchell, Nolan Knight, Francis Houska and Mike Holtz.
She was born June 15, 1910, in Wadena, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest E. and Elizabeth M. (Durfey) Kelly. She attended the rural Fayette County schools and graduated from Fayette High School in 1927. She was united in marriage December 23, 1931, to Thomas Joseph Bergan. Five children were born to this union. They farmed in the Elkader area unit Thomas' death September 12, 1967. Nelly married William Bjerke July 31, 1971. For many years they traveled extensively and spent the winter months in Chandler, Ariz. After William's death in November of 1991, Nelly continued to live in her home in rural Elkader, spending winters in South Carolina. Since December of 1995, she has made her home with her daughter and son-in-law in Goose Creek. Nelly has been a member of St. Joseph's parish for over 60 years, and is a past president of St. Joseph's Guild. Her occupation was wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and visiting her family and friends. She died Friday evening, March 20, 1998, at her daughter's home in Goose Creek, S.C. following a long illness.
Survivors include her five children, Patricia (Mike) Roach, Joe (Marilyn) Bergan, Mike (Ruth) Bergan, Bernard (Maureen) Bergan, all of Elkader, and Catherine (Daryl) Thornton, Goose Creek, S.C.: three step-children, William (Linda) Bjerke and Cyrus (Kay) Bjerke, Minneapolis, Minn., and Twila (Ron) Evans, Ulen, Minn.: 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a brother Cecil M. Kelly, Fayette; and four sisters-in-law.
Besides here two husbands, she was preceded in death by two grandsons, Michael Roach and Steven Bergan; a great-grandson Adam Hach; two step-grandsons, Kyle Bjerke and Michael Osborne; her parents; four brothers, three sisters; and a daughter-in-law, Carlene Bjerke.
