Freda Anne (Kelling) Asp, 88, McGrath died March 11, 2013 at St. Clare Living Community in Mora. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 16, at Zion Lutheran Church in McGrath with Reverend Elliott Malm officiating.
Arrangements were with Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
Freda was born Nov. 1, 1924 in Jewett Township, Aitkin County to Fred and Anna (Stumme) Kelling, their eighth child.
She first attended public school at the Tin School in the Malmo area. Later she lived with her sister Edna during the school year so she could attend and graduate grammar school from Wilson School at Dad's Corner. She contracted polio at age 14, and was still able to graduate from McGrath High School in 1942 at age 17.
Freda married Harold S. Asp June 16, 1942 in Jewett Township. Harold and Freda bought a farm in 1944 and spent 67 years farming. Along with helping Harold on the farm, Freda drove school bus for more than 19 years. She would volunteer her time and bus to take area children to Red Cross swimming lessons at Mille Lacs Lake. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in McGrath.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, son Berton, infant daughter, sisters: Edna (Martin) Holmen and infant Eldora; brothers: Joe (Alvina), Arnold (Marcella), LaVerne (June), Edward (Lucille), and infant Christopher Kelling; and her parents Fred and Anna (Stumme) Kelling.
