Martha Ann "Marty" Baganz
Age 87, of Charlottesville, VA, died on November 10, 2011 due to complications associated with myelodysplastic syndrome.
Martha Ann was born in Bryn Mawr, PA on December 8, 1923, the daughter of Roland Paddock Kelley and Pauline Helen Bates. A lifelong summer resident of New Harbor, Maine, Marty grew up in Canton, Ohio where she graduated from Lehman High School in 1942. She received her undergraduate degree in television and journalism from the University of Pennsylvania in 1946 as the University's first student majoring in television. While at Penn, she met her husband, Herbert M. Baganz. During the time Herbert finished medical school and did his postgraduate training in Philadelphia, Marty worked for the University of Pennsylvania and also taught in the Philadelphia public school system. In 1951 her husband's medical practice took them to Wilmington Delaware where they lived for over 25 years and where they raised their four children. Marty and Herb subsequently relocated to the Washington DC area where Marty worked in Development Office for The Holton-Arms School and in development for the United States Tennis Association. Following the death of her husband in 1989, Marty moved to Charlottesville, VA to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She remained in Charlottesville until her death.
Throughout her life, Marty was deeply involved in community service activities, contributing her enthusiastic efforts to many organizations, including the Delaware Museum of Fine Arts, Winterthur Museum, the Delaware State Hospital, the Junior League of Wilmington, Wilmington Friends School, the American Friend Service Committee, the Virginia Chamber Orchestra, and the ARC of the Piedmont. She was a member of the Wilmington Monthly Meeting of Friends. Marty also had a love of adventure and during her life had traveled to Europe, Africa, Asia and Antarctica.
Martha is survived by her children, Bruce P. Baganz of Houston, Texas, Barbara Baganz Simpson of Charlottesville, Virginia and Mark D. Baganz, of Annapolis, Maryland; and also by her four grandchildren Ethan Simpson, Blake Simpson, August Baganz and Elizabeth Baganz. She was predeceased by her parents, her son Andrew Baganz, and Herbert, her husband of over 42 years.
Burial was at the Harrington Meeting House cemetery, Bristol, Maine.
