Ellen Kelley Abildgaard, 88, of Washington Avenue, died on Saturday, October 26, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Portland.
She was born in Portland on April 8, 1914, a daughter of James A. and Elizabeth (Grace) Kelley. She graduated from Cathedral High School and Gray's Business College. She was employed for 35 years with Campbell, Payson and Noyes, also known as Commercial Union-York and One Beacon.
Mrs. Abildgaard was a longtime resident of Portland, and them moved to Cumberland where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law for many years. She was a member of the Daughters of Union Veterans, the Insurance Women of Southern Maine, and the Quarter Century Club of Commercial Union.
Mrs. Abildgaard attended and was a member of St. Ansgar Danish Church and was also a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, and became a member of the First Lutheran Church. She was a member of, and greatly enjoyed attending, the Tuesday Group at First Lutheran Church. She was also an avid Red Sox fan.
Her husband, P. Howard Abildgaard, and her sister, J. Patricia Merrill, predeceased her.
Mrs. Abildgaard is survived by two sons, James P. Abildgaard of Melbourne, FL and David A. Abildgaard of Portland, ME; her daughter, Karen Abildgaard Duncanson and her husband Richard of Cumberland; three grandsons, Philip W. Carr III and his wife Staci of Cumberland, James P. Abildgaard II and his wife Joanne of TN, and Jason Abildgaard and his wife of Windham; two granddaughters, Stacy M. Carr of Portland and Jeanette McElroy of Limington; great grandchildren, Devin R. Carr, Chance P. Carr, Ethan C. Carr, all of Cumberland, Kelsea Abildgaard of TN, and Amanda and Samantha McElroy; a great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Hay & Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress Street, Portland. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, 132 Auburn Street, Portland, with Reverend David Alvord officiating. Interment will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
